Description: The wooden horse saddles are commonly found in Sumba, Sumbawa and Lombok and date back approximately 100 years. They were used for racing and everyday work and made predominately from Teak. Today, wooden saddles are still used by some riders in Sumba but most riders have converted to leather. Sumba and Sumbawa ponies are still used for pack, riding and light draft work. They are a notoriously strong breed despite the fact that they rarely reach 13 hands in height. Young boys also ride these ponies in traditional dance competitions where they maneuver them in patterns with decorated bells on their knees to chime in rhythm to the drumming.
